February - Happy heart month!

2/12/2019

It is not just on Valentine’s Day that we need to pay attention to our hearts. Getting to know the frequency and rate that your heart beats during exercise and at rest is beneficial for several reasons.

resting heart rate (HR)

Picture
Get in the routine of checking your resting Heart Rate (HR) first thing when you wake up to help determine whether you should work out or take a day off from training. To get a resting HR, place your index and middle fingers on the under side of your wrist, called your radial HR. Then once you feel the beating of your heart, count the number of beats for 15 sec and multiply by 4. The total will give you a fairly accurate resting HR.

Keep track of your resting HR and if ever you notice it is 4-5 beats higher than normal, it may be an indicator of being over trained, getting sick or just fatigued. Simply by taking a few days off you could avoid an injury or a cold as your body fights off being run down.
Your Maximum HR (MHR) can be easily calculated: 220-your age. This is important for determining your desired target HR for your training session. During Interval Training, for example, you may want to get HR in Zone 4 or Anaerobic Zone which is 80-90% of your Maximum HR (MHR). For more Aerobic Zone training, Zone 3, you would want to stay between 70-80%. Your HR can fluctuate, so buying a device that keeps track of your HR while training, sleeping, etc can be a benefit to you, your trainer or coach, and your doctor.

Who doesn't want to get better, healthier, faster & stronger this year? If you've been living in a state of being sick from cold and flu this winter, this is a message for you! We want to encourage you all to see from our perspective and how it has impacted one of our client's life.

it starts with you.

Whether your view of being healthy consist eating the right balance of food, or include a 30 minute run per day, or having a good balance between work and rest, we all can agree that it needs to start from you and you alone.

When you hear a message of being healthy, do you shrink back in your couch, or do you take on this challenge seriously?

your body is your investment.

Picture

If you invest so much in buying branded clothings and appliances for your house, think about this, these things don't always stay with you until you're old, but your body does!

Start investing in your body...

Not because you're obliged to, but as a way to love yourself.

If you remember Anna Webster, our athlete that we featured last month, she wanted to share some words regarding this topic...

A message from our freestyle fitness athlete of 2018 Anna Webster

Two more great reasons that FreeStyle Fitness Spring Training is the place to be this spring:

If staying at a bed and breakfast in beautiful Oliver, BC, having a chef prepare your meals, and burning over 1000 calories a day with hiking/running/golf/tennis and daily yoga aren't enough reasons for you to want to join us for our FF Spring Training this year, here are two more:
Okanagan Named Number One Wine Destination in World: Huffington Post
We’ve long been known for our wine and now the Okanagan has been named as a Top Wine Destination in the World.
The Huffington Post named the region as the number one place to enjoy wine, but really how could we not win with scenic vineyard views and exceptional wines.
This year we will again be cycling to vineyards in Oliver, BC, Wine Capital of Canada, enjoying beautiful views and tasting some of Canada's best wines.

The Kettle Valley Railway is one of the most remarkable sections of railway ever built in North America. It stretched from Mid-Way to Hope, Via Penticton. The route was carved out of the most rugged terrain. Although the trains have stopped running, you can still explore the old routes, and see the stunning views for yourself. The rails have now been lifted and turned into a linear park with flat trails suitable for hiking and biking.

This year we will be cycling along the world famous Kettle Valley Railway from Naramata to Chute Lake, experiencing tunnels, rock ovens and breath taking views of Okanagan Lake.

November Athlete of the Month - Cari!

Picture
Cari has been training with us for a few years, starting with our outside evening training and now finding consistency with her early-morning before-work sessions. Cari and her family are very athletic, her daughter playing field hockey and her husband playing soccer. Cari keeps active with hikes up Burnaby Mountain with her dog as well as playing on two field hockey teams. Her strength, cardio and agility has really improved which allows to her play hard and keep up the intensity even during the final minutes of the final game on the week-end. Cari scored two goals last week-end, the second being the winning goal! She scored it in dramatic fashion, sprinting in to tip in the shot.
Good work Cari!
